Paul A. Young Fine Chocolates (Camden Passage)

33 Camden Passage, Islington, London N1 8EA

Rating: 9.5/10 (6 votes cast)

Paul A. Young’s Islington shop is tucked away in a quiet pedestrian shopping street near Angel tube station. The shop is small and unassuming, but the purple exterior grabs your attention and the moment you open the door, you enter a chocolate wonderland.

The interior of the shop is simple but stylish. It’s a strange mix of country kitchen and gothic. Bars of chocolate are arranged neatly on a welsh dresser while large gilt frames house photographs of chocolate cakes and desserts. It’s a little surreal, but welcoming and friendly.

By the door there is a small table with a large pan of thick, dairy free Aztec hot chocolate warming on a hot plate and an array of brightly coloured spice jars. A large counter toward the rear of the shop is covered in neatly ordered ranks of ganaches and truffles, some subtly decorated in burnished metallics (both coatings and foils). The range is interesting and exciting, with everything from simple caramels to more adventurous creations like Marmite truffles.

A great little shop just a few minutes walk from Angel station. Also stocks a range of bars from Amano and Mast Brothers (try the Madagascan Fleur de Sel!)

Just the best chocs in the world. And really glad they’re doing the hot chocolate powder again. The Chili-Spice is especially awesome.

I love the way Paul plays with unusual flavours – there’s always something new to try. The shop itself is lovely: filled with the smell of fresh chocolate, with welcoming, friendly staff.

The stratosphere of AAA class chocolatiers, where the air is thin is occupied by Paul Young and only a few others (Pierre Marcolini is one of them). Known for his really adventurous flavours (past favourites include Marmite, Port and Stilton, and don’t miss his world class award winning Salted Caramels). Don’t be under any illusion, the chocolate is amongst the most pricey out there, but if spend 20 minutes in the shop learning how Paul researches and puts his flavours together, you’ll discover why. Probably the best chocolate in London.
What you need to buy: Salted Caramels, Dark Chocolate Rochers, Aztec Hot Chocolate, any of his chocolate brownies.

Overwhelming. Dropped in yesterday and staggered out feeling quite giddy with two newly converted chocoholic friends. Fabulous, friendly, knowledgeable staff . There aren’t enough superlatives for the chocolate itself but highlights included anything with sea salt in it, the best brownies I’ve ever tried (though Ottolenghi’s are also pretty special) and mind blowing flavours in the filled chocolates.
