This was one of the first London chocolate shops I discovered. I was quite intimidated by it then, to me it was like the Tiffany’s of chocolate, not somewhere I felt comfortable walking into. As it happened, the manager then (2005) was truly lovely and incredibly passionate about chocolate and I went on to learn a lot from him before he left the company a year or two later.

It’s been through some interesting times in the last few years with some less-than-pleasant staff but there’s a lot of change underfoot as they halved the footage and removed the seating and new management means you are likely to get much better service.

The chocolates are consistently good here and the pastries (made downstairs) are superb and incredibly good value for the quality (when you compare to chain stores in the vicinity).

My favourites are the 100% ganache (limited edition, not available loose), the Salvador and the Rigoletto Lait. The latter, I believe, is one of the finest milk chocolates ever made.

Downstairs there is a private tasting room for groups of up to 12, and it’s where the Chocolate Ecstasy Evening Tour starts with an abbreviated (half hour) version of their formal two hour tasting.

One of the finest chocolatiers in London. You can always rely on their quality and wide choice of couture chocolates. Flavours are a little more mainstream and ‘safe’, so a great shop if you are looking for top chocolates for a present, then you can’t go wrong. But like the top ranked chocolatiers, prices are most definitely at the top end (well worth it though). Don’t miss the limited edition Duo Ganache coutures which are only available while stocks last until the end of November ’10, incorporating a unique 100% cacao ganache with Caracas (60%) – only available in a box though!
What you need to try: Caracas, Mint, House truffles. Cake: Delice (yum – a must for dinner parties, but make sure you order a couple of days ahead of time to avoid disappointment as they are incredibly popular)
You’ve heard the saying “Chocolate isn’t for sharing”, La Maison’s chocolate most definitely falls into this category.
