Hotel Chocolat’s “Roast + Conch” shop and cafe is a unique Hotel Chocolat store, opened January 2012. A traditional store with a small take-away bar upstairs, downstairs feature a cool and exciting café, which houses mini versions of all the equipment needed to turn cocoa beans into chocolate. It smells amazing.

The decor takes some design cues from The Rabot Estate store in Borough Market, with rustic unfinished wood mixed with stylish displays. The bars feature the “coffee vs cocoa” concept that Hotel Chocolat first featured in their Edinburgh store – choose from any coffee style drink (latte, espresso, etc) and have it made either with coffee beans or cocoa beans.

Upstairs, the store sells Hotel Chocolat and Rabot Estate chocolate and has a small takeaway “Coffee vs Cacao” bar, where you can select to have your espresso, cappuccino or latte made with either coffee beans or cocoa beans. Next to the bar is a specially made roaster that roasts the cocoa beans in small batches.

Downstairs, the café area features plenty of seating space, a large serving area, and custom made versions of all the machinery required to make chocolate. There’s a bean breaker, which breaks up the beans that are roasted upstairs, a winnower, which removes the shells, a refiner/conch, which stone grinds and refines the cacaco into liquor, and a tempering machine for making very small batches of bars. All the savoury food served in the café features chocolate made on site from beans grown on the Hotel Chocolat estate in St. Lucia.

Not only is the food great, but it’s the perfect way to learn a little more about the chocolate making process.
