It’s been a few years since I visited Chococo’s Swanage store and I know they’ve expanded it since then so I would love to return. It is a hidden gem in this pretty seaside town where you can now sit and enjoy and exceptional hot chocolate, as well as linger over their fabulous selection of chocolates.

Chococo is run by husband and wife team, Claire and Andy Burnett and their team of helpers, including their two children. Claire and Andy used to have big marketing jobs in the city which they’ve put that experience to good use in the design of their chocolates, website and other marketing.

Chococo use excellent quality chocolate in their creations and fresh, local ingredients. Their fresh truffles will only last a few weeks (but won’t really last that long near any serious chocolate lover). They use round truffle moulds for most of their chocolates and fill them with a very light cream ganache made with local Dorset cream. They are quite unqiue in their aerated creaminess and I particularly like them, though the texture is not necessarily everyone’s come of tea. They are certainly impressing most though, as they grow from strength to strength and continue to win awards, including several Great Taste Awards.

The shop is light and airy and the staff are very warm and friendly. You can also watch them making the chocolates if you’re there at the right time, and they are very welcoming to children.

Our first visit – remiss of us as it’s our second closest proper chocolate shop!
It’s off the beaten track, but a decent sign on a wall led us down the tiny side road to the shop. On entering, there was a powerful aroma of good chocolate, and a good level of stock. The young lady serving could not have been more helpful, and we came away with a good haul including a few freebies! Unfortunately we’d just eaten lunch, so we had to give the hot chocolate a miss – we’ll be back soon to try that.
Some very interesting flavours were available, among them white chocolate with strawberries and black pepper, cardamom based truffles rolled in pistachios, chai flavour, and Sea Salt Popcorn Clusters.
Rated 9/10 – excellent product but the shop itself could do with a designer’s hand.

I’m lucky in that I live in Swanage & can pop into the shop whenever I like. It is off the main shopping area but is well worth the detour. The chocs are great with usually 25+varieties to choose from at any one time plus seasonal specials. They always have a bowl of chocs to taste whilst browsing. However the best is still to come if you like hot chocolate the café sells the best which is always served with one of their chocs. The one downside is the café is very small with little space between tables &can be very busy.
